What is a publicist?

Monday, July 10th, 2017

The dictionary definition of a publicist is:  ‘a person responsible for publicizing a product, person, or company.’

Though the term publicist is sometimes used in conjunction with PR people who work for celebrities, actors, Hollywood stars and the rest – it can just as easily be used as the term for any PR professional.

In fact, in the UK it is one of the main search words used by those who are looking online for a PR agency or consultant.  All these people cannot be budding celebs (or I hope not – it would mean our celebrity culture has got way out of hand) – so many people must be using it correctly, as defined above.

But, I think many in the PR profession rather look down their noses at the word publicist.  Why is that?

It could be because they too connect it with the world of celebrity, reality ‘stars’, the fluffy, frivolous, champagne drinking end of the PR spectrum.  These serious PR professionals – and I count Borough PR among them – offer targeted campaigns, campaign analysis, strategic thinking and implementation.  They don’t want to be tarnished by the publicist epithet.

I think we should reclaim the word publicist.  Its short, to the point and says what we do on the tin.
